abstract = "Transport of sediments in an estuary depends on the discharge from
the rivers that drain the estuary and on meteorological
conditions, which define the local circulation. Suspended solids
modify the spectral response of water, making their observation
from images of orbital sensors possible. This study proposes to
evaluate the temporal and spatial variation of the suspended
sediments in Patos Lagoon estuary, using the OLI sensor, Landsat-8
satellite. Atmospheric and radiometric correction was realized for
eight images from June 2013 to February 2014. The band 4,
correspondent to the red wavelength, was segmented in 15 intervals
of reflectance. In the winter, when winds from the south and
southwest with high-speed predominates, the reflectance is small,
indicating the entrance of water from the ocean in the estuary.
The largest reflectance in the period of spring and summer is
related to the transport of suspended sediments towards the exit
of the estuary due to the predominance of winds from the
northeast. Is possible to visualize the contribution of discharges
from S{\~a}o Gon{\c{c}}alos channel, which is highest from June
to November and lowest from December to February. Local
variations, such high rainfall and change in wind direction, can
cause unexpected changes in flow sediments. The concentration of
suspended solids in the Patos Lagoon estuary presents spatial and
temporal variations and is related to discharges from the rivers,
rainfall, speed wind direction and meteorological tide. Data in
situ is needed for the quantification of sediment.",
